Not really. I remember seeing a whole bunch of them hanging up over one of the cashiers, at the local Child World, back around 1983.
It's unfortunate that my brother (two years older than me) broke the eye off of his own Kermit plush*, whacking his head against the arm of the dark brown corduroy easy chair, in order to frighten me and my sister (three years younger than me), some time before we moved, in 1983. I have no memory of what happened to his Fozzy Bear plush*, that he got near the time I was declared old enough to move from the crib to the lower bunk of our bunk beds.
*Rowlf was the only one who was a puppet. Sadly, we filled him matchbox cars. Come to think of it, one of our cousins had a Cookiemonster puppet. My brother says, that she put a hole in the back of his mouth, for the cookies to go through.
